Mason's Miracle Story

Meet Mason!

In the fall of 2016, after a night of not feeling well and experiencing an excruciating headache, Mason’s family took him to their community hospital.  Mason’s health was rapidly deteriorating; he could no longer move his left arm or head. It was quickly decided that he needed to be transferred to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH).  By the time he arrived, his left leg was beginning to lose function and he could no longer walk without assistance.

After running many tests at BBCH, Mason’s fast-acting team of doctors determined that he had Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), a virus that was attacking his spine and causing paralysis. Mason was the only known case of AFM in the state of Maine in 2016 and only one of 132 cases nationwide. He was treated over the course of the next several days, killing the virus and halting the progression of the paralysis.

By the time Mason left BBCH, he was able to walk on his own, although he still goes to therapy everyday to regain mobility in his left arm.

The Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s fundraising campaign that Rite Aid/Walgreens is hosting through May 12th is particularly meaningful to Well’s store manager, Roxanne Johnson because Mason is her grandson.   A HUGE thank you to every Rite Aid and Walgreens associate who is committed to raising funds for our local kids and for their fellow associates, like Roxanne.
