Meet Caroline! A friend of BBCH, Rite Aid and Walgreens!

Meet Caroline!

Caroline is seven years and loves horseback riding, her guinea pig, Butterscotch, reading and being active with her Brownie Troop.  She is one of the brave, young BBCH patients who is cheering on Rite Aid and Walgreens in the final days of their Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s fundraising campaign!

On October 30th, 2017 Caroline slid off of her horse and broke her elbow. Her parents took her to their local hospital, but it was determined that Caroline needed surgery and they were transferred to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH). Once arriving at the Pediatric Emergency Department at BBCH, Caroline’s spirits were lifted and a scary situation became a new adventure for her. It had been a long night and she wouldn’t have surgery until the morning. Simple things like having the appropriate-sized medical devices and hospital gowns and her pick of Disney movies on the in-room TV put Caroline, and her parents at ease. According to her parents, “Our experience at BBCH was memorable, not only because of the accident that brought us there, but because of the amazing staff we came in contact with. Caroline still remembers her Child Life specialist’s name and refers to her as her friend. While she was processing all of the things she couldn’t do, they were busy showing her that she could and would continue to have fun. Just hours after her surgery she was able to participate in the BBCH Trick or Treating event where several times she exclaimed, “this is the best day ever!” We were so worried about trying to figure out a way to make up missing one of our child’s favorite holidays and it turned into an experience we will never forget. Seeing the outpouring of love and support for the children and the smiles brought to the children’s faces was truly something special. We are forever grateful to everyone we encountered, from the emergency department, all of those at BBCH, the trauma surgery team, and everyone in between for not only healing our daughter, but ensuring she felt safe and happy during her stay.”
